Combatting negativity in nursing

Lucille Packard Children's Hospital, Stanford University, Palo Alto, CA

Article Outline

The article by Paulette Suhr that appeared in the January issue of the Journal was spot on (“The future of nursing,” Vol 89, No 1). This article should be required reading for all nursing faculty members and administrators. Diversity in nursing is increasing in part because some individuals choose nursing as a second career. Experienced professionals from other career models will not tolerate the rampant bullying and negativity that pervade some health care systems.

I was a faculty member at one point in my career, and we discussed affirmations and how to thwart negativity and move beyond it. We frequently reviewed positive tactics to achieve educational and career goals without the carnage. I would like to applaud Ms Suhr for highlighting the emperor's new clothes of nursing, and I hope she will continue to be a positive ray of hope on this amazing professional path.
