May 6: National Nurses Day
National Nurses Week begins each year on May 6 and ends on May 12, Florence Nightingale's birthday. Each of ANA's state and territorial nurses associations promotes the nursing profession at the state and regional levels and conducts celebrations on these dates to recognize the contributions that nurses and nursing make to the community.

June 2008: National “Time Out” Day (Date to be announced)
AORN established National “Time Out” Day in 2004 to increase awareness of the Joint Commission's Universal Protocol for Preventing Wrong Site, Wrong Procedure, Wrong Person Surgery. As an integral part of patient safety, “time outs” should be an integral step in all surgical procedures. Next year, plan on recognizing National Time Out Day at your facility to remind every member of the surgical team how critical it is to take a time out for patient safety.

October 5–11: National Fire Prevention Week
Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 conflagration that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures, and burned more than 2,000 acres. The fire began on October 8 but continued into and did most of its damage on October 9, 1871. In 1920, President Woodrow Wilson issued the first National Fire Prevention Day proclamation, and since 1922, Fire Prevention Week has been observed on the Sunday through Saturday period in which October 9 falls.

November 9–15: Perioperative Nurse Week
In 1979, the AORN House of Delegates approved a resolution requesting that “AORN promote a day each year [for] consumer education to enhance public knowledge regarding our perioperative role.” That has since increased to a weeklong celebration where individual members, AORN chapters, hospitals, and other medical facilities organize special events and activities to help educate the public about the diverse roles performed by perioperative registered nurses.

November 13–15: NANDA International 2008 Conference
